Where is coffee grown?
Coffee is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Commercial production is concentrated broadly within the tropics, sometimes described as the Coffee Belt.
The Coffee Belt
The phrase “Coffee Belt” is a useful geographic shorthand for the broad tropical zone where coffee can be cultivated. It is not a precise botanical boundary.
Africa
Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania are important coffee-producing countries. Production systems, varieties, elevations and processing practices differ significantly within and between countries.
Central and South America
Brazil and Colombia are major producers, while Central America includes countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Local microclimates and varieties contribute to substantial diversity.
Asia and the Pacific
Vietnam, Indonesia, India and Papua New Guinea are among the region's coffee producers. Species mix and production systems vary, with canephora especially important in Vietnam.
