UK coffee shops: blends, roasts, origins and taste profiles
Coffee-shop coffee is not one uniform product. Major chains may use several beans, blends and roast profiles simultaneously, and individual drinks can be customised.

Starbucks UK's current coffee pages explicitly group products into Blonde, Medium and Dark roast categories and list individual coffees such as Colombia Nariño, Ethiopia, Guatemala Antigua, House Blend, Kenya, Pike Place, Caffè Verona, Espresso Roast and Sumatra. Its current UK beverage guide also identifies Signature Espresso, Blonde Espresso and Decaf Espresso as distinct bean choices.
Costa Coffee

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mocha Italia Signature Blend | Medium / house-style blend | Arabica + Robusta; Central and South American coffees in Costa's published description. | Smooth, nutty and full-bodied. | Costa also offers decaffeinated coffee; exact blend composition can change. |
Costa's published coffee information describes its Signature Blend as a blend of Arabica and Robusta and provides its house-style flavour description. Treat individual café availability and current decaf formulation as changeable.
Pret A Manger
| Blend / coffee | Roast | Origins | Published taste profile | Decaf |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Organic Espresso | Dark | Peru, Honduras, Ethiopia and Sumatra. | Rich and intense; dark chocolate and bittersweet caramel. | Check current UK menu for decaf availability. |
Caffè Nero

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classico | Italian-style roast | Latin America, East Africa and Southeast Asia. | Rich, bold and complex; toasted bread and dark chocolate style. | Decaf availability is shop/menu dependent. |
Greggs
| Drink / coffee offering | Published information | Origin / roast detail | Decaf |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espresso-based drinks | Greggs' current coffee menu includes espresso-based drinks such as latte, cappuccino and flat white. | Greggs does not currently publish the same detailed blend/origin breakdown on its consumer site as Starbucks' coffee catalogue. | Availability and recipe should be checked against the current Greggs menu. |
| Filter / brewed coffee | Menu offerings can vary. | Detailed current origin/roast information is not consistently published publicly. | Check current store/menu information. |
Editorial rule: where a chain does not publish a complete blend, origin or roast specification, Coffee Knowledge will say “not publicly specified” rather than infer it from taste or third-party claims.
Why these profiles should not be treated as taste rankings
A published “chocolate” or “nutty” description is a sensory target or brand description, not a guarantee that every customer will perceive those notes. Preparation, milk, recipe, freshness and individual perception all influence the final drink.
